Homemade Gummies

 

Yields:  about 2 cups of liquid (amount of jigglers depend on molding used)      Prep Time:  10 minutes       Total Time:  25 minutes

 

A great source of amino acids and quality nutrition, these wigglers are a treat you can feel good about serving.   Best of all, you control the ingredients!

 

Ingredients

1 1/2 cups grape juice (or your favorite juice)

1/2 cup water

1 tablespoon fresh lemon juice

5 tablespoons grass fed gelatin

1/8 teaspoon coconut oil (careful not to use too much or it will harden on the top of the gummies)

 

Directions

1. To prepare, place desired molding tray on a cookie pan. 

 

2. Mix all ingredients, except the coconut oil, in a class measuring cup with pouring spout (such as Pyrex).  Using a whisk, mix well.  Combining the cold water and juice with the gelatin allows the gelatin to “bloom” first, and reduces clumps when heated. 

 

3. Heat pot (cast iron ceramic, like Le Creuset works well so ingredients do not stick), with 1/8 teaspoon coconut oil.  Pour gelatin and grape juice mixture in.  A spatula may be helpful to get all mixture out of bowl, as gelatin starts to thicken. 

 

4. Bring mixture to a low boil.  Pour mixture back into measuring cup, and using the measuring cup, carefully pour the liquid gelatin into the desired mold. 

The white part is simply because the liquid was extremely hot, and nothing else.  If you use too much coconut oil, the oil will separate to the top and will harden as it cools. 

 

5. Place cookie tray in freezer for about 15 minutes.  Any extra liquid can be poured into a glass dish and cooled just as the wigglers.  Instead of a hand-held wiggler, you can just spoon out the mixture when cooled.  Remove tray and pop out wigglers.  Store in refrigerator, and enjoy!

 

So, these may seem a little intimidating to make, and yet they are super fast and actually quite easy.  Also, some may seem thrown off by the concept of using gelatin.  Yes, the idea of gelatin used to not sit well with me, and yet, for many reasons, especially the healing power, I have personally found with it, I am able to use it.  I do search for well sourced gelatin, not simply the stuff in a little packet found in any old store.  If you’re a little curious, you can read more about the benefits of gelatin here.  I will say my hair and nails have never been healthier!

 

I first got into gelatin when my mommy worries got the best of me when it came to one of my kids and their growth.  They were super picky at the time, and I really was looking for nutrient dense options that they would eat.  I’ve always known of gelatin and the touted benefits.  It was just one of those things that I never looked into until I was desperate, and when a parent is desperate, they don’t stop searching until they are satisfied!

 

I used silicone molds to make the gummy shapes.  There are all sorts of shape molds available.  Just make sure the mold you buy is truly silicone, as there are a lot of imposter products that fill their molds with other chemical plasticizers. 

 

Additionally, you could use any juice you like.  I used to make these with lemon juice, maple syrup and water.  That got a little tedious when I wanted to make them fast, so I found a juice the kids liked, and used about 1/3 the amount of water to 2/3 the amount of juice.  My kids don’t expect a super sweet gummy, so I can get away with diluting.  You could always use full juice, or other sweeteners if desired.

 

The nice thing about this recipe is you could add whatever you want.  It is fully customizable.  Some people like to add an immune boosting syrup during the winter months.  I’ve used everything from kale juice to prune juice.  The successful recipes I’ll eventually get to posting, as some truly worked well.  I tried fish oil once.  As of now, I don’t see that coming as a post.  Not a fan and that’s why you don’t see a recipe here for it! 

 

I used molds that are BPA, PVC & Phthalate free 100% pure food grade silicone.  Many times, plastic fillers are used, so it's important to be aware of what the company is using to make the molds.  Additionally, I used grass-fed gelatin that at this point in time, I feel is made responsibly without additional chemicals and has been tested to find no disease, antibiotics, hormones, pesticides, or herbicides in the skin or hides of animals (gross to think about, but if you're going to eat Jello, store-bought gummies or similar, you might as well know what you're eating).  Here are links to the products I use.
